Some years back as part of a bit of experimental archaeology we set out to make and test out a heater shield using traditional materials. 3 layers of 3mm poplar planks glued together and curved around a former then wrapped in linen made for a surprising light shield. We tested it against a range of weapons.............. then made another just to test it to destruction. We were so amazed at how strong these shields were that we decided to keep making them. It has taken a while to perfect the process and we’ve learned a lot since our first prototypes. The materials are not cheap, and they’re not quick to make, but they are now available to buy. To begin with we are offering blank shields with a white gesso finish and custom painted shields made to order.
